10 Toddler Travel Essentials

After living in Germany for 4 years, and traveling back and forth overseas with a newborn, infant, and then toddler, I feel I am pretty well seasoned when it comes to what to pack when traveling. On our first flight I packed TWO giant beach bags and was so unorganized and even though I brought everything but the kitchen sink, I was not prepared. I have since then perfected my packing list and these are my top 10 toddler travel essentials. Whether we are going out on a day trip, or leaving for a few days, I never leave the house without these items.

  1. A travel potty. This is number one on my list because my child loathes public restrooms. She thinks they are gross and I am not even joking, I have a blend of essential oils in my purse that I spray in our stall because she complains about the smell. Also, who knows when you will be stuck with no bathroom in site and when toddlers have to go, they have to go! After trying three different travel potties, this 2-in-1 Go Potty™ with Travel Bag from OXO is by far my favorite. We use it daily at home as a normal potty seat, and I put it on public bathroom seats as well. When there is no bathroom in site, you can throw a bag inside of it and after your toddler goes to the bathroom, just throw the bag away. That option is my three year olds favorite. It comes with a travel bag as well so I just throw it in the back of our stroller whenever we leave the house.OXO travel potty

  2. Snacks. Food always prevents major meltdowns when it comes to my toddler….and myself too. I love this Flippy™ Snack Cup with Travel Cover which keeps spills to a minimum. No more Cheerios all over the backseat of the car, or crying over spilled Goldfish. I hook it onto the handle of the stroller so it is one less thing I need to stuff into my purse. Squeeze pouches are another staple in my travel bags. No more messy hands and I am always sure to get the ones full of veggies and good stuff to keep my toddler’s belly full and blood sugar level out of tantrum range.Flippy™ Snack Cup with Travel Cover
  3. Wipes, wipes, and more wipes. I use wipes for everything and refuse to ever leave the house without them. You guys, my excitement when I found this On-The-Go Wipes Dispenser w/ Diaper Pouch. There’s a pouch on the back for diapers, but since we don’t use those anymore, I throw my phone and keys in there so I no longer have to lug my purse into every place that we go. #momclutch That should be a thing, a mom clutch. Versatile, totally useful, and comes in a stylish white and green color way. (You can see it in the picture above!)
  4. Spill-proof Sippy Cup. There is nothing worse then thinking you have everything under control at baggage check, and you open your bag to remove your laptop and there is spilled juice EVERYWHERE. It has happened to me and I could have cried.  I held up the line and everything in my bag was drenched right before an 11 hour flight. After trying this Transitions Soft Spout Sippy Cup Set I am hooked. It has a lid that flips down over the spout to keep spills in. I throw this in my purse and have yet to have any leaks. It also transitions into training lid or you can use it as an open cup for older toddlers.img_4429
  5.  Cleaning supplies. You can’t bring along sippy cups without having something to clean them with right? This Cleaning Set For Straw & Sippy Cups is a lifesaver. I have used it in hotel rooms, on airplanes, and on trains all over Europe. I used to use it to clean my breast pump parts as well! Be sure to bring along a travel sized dishwashing soap as well. The last thing you want on a trip is bottles or cups with 3 day old milk in them.
  6. Hand sanitizer. On the topic of cleaning, make sure to always have hand sanitizer with you. My favorite is this spray from the Honest Co. No burning, no fragrance, no alcohol, and no wet hands. It dries right away and I pull it out and spray it on my toddler’s hands and my own when we are out and about.
  7. Books/toys. I always have tons of little blind bag toys in my purse. My Little Pony’s, Shopkins, anything tiny enough to not take up space but will still keep my toddler entertained. These are also great for smaller spaces like airplane pull down trays and restaurant tables! I also keep one book in my bag or in the back of the stroller just in case my toddler needs some more one on one entertainment.
  8. Stroller hook. I don’t know what I did before I got one of these heavy duty hooks. I use it to hang my purse on the back of my stroller, to carry in groceries, and my new favorite is to have Mila hold onto it when we are walking and she doesn’t want to sit in the stroller. This Handy Stroller Hook is my favorite.Handy Stroller Hook
  9. First aid kit/medications. The items I pack depend on the duration of my trip. If we are running out into town for a few hours or even the day, I always bring at bandaids at the very least. If it is any longer than 24 hours I bring this first aid kit with me to make sure I am prepared for almost anything that could happen to a toddler.
  10. Essential oils. I just started using these and I am hooked. You better believe I will be bringing along new blends in my purse every time we take a trip, and that my diffuser will be coming along with us to help us fall asleep in every hotel room we stop at.

What are your must haves when traveling with your toddler? Did any of these make your list as well?
