5 Habits to Start Your Day Right and a Better Things Giveaway

Being a mom can be difficult and most nights by bedtime I am already craving the next day’s cup of coffee. Morning’s are the hardest for me and if I don’t follow these 5 habits to start my day off on the right foot, then I find myself laying in bed checking my phone for an hour, dreading leaving the bedroom. These all work wonders for me and once you get into the habit of doing them, your days become a thousand times better!

5 habits to start your day right for moms

  1. Wake up before the kids. I loathe even thinking about this one because I love my sleep, but on the mornings when I wake up first, the day goes 1000 times better than when we wake up together. I have some time to myself, to breathe, diffuse some essential oils, and most importantly to drink my coffee, WHILE IT IS STILL HOT, and in peace. It works wonders for my overall attitude to have some time alone before taking care of everyone else’s needs.
  2. Don’t look at your phone. Or the computer. No screen time for the first hour you are awake. It is hard, especially when you’re addicted to your phone, or work on your phone like I do. But waking up and checking emails or seeing horrible stories on Facebook just stresses me out before my day even begins. There’s no need for that added anxiety. Start your day off fresh and focused on yourself, not the lives of others on social media.
  3. Eat breakfast. Like a real breakfast that has another food group besides coffee. I have to work reallyyyyyyyy hard at this one because as much as I like breakfast foods, I don’t get hungry until noon. I just live off coffee until that time and my mood is down and I am just slumpy overall. Slumpy? See, I didn’t have breakfast today. When I make breakfast I like to have my toddler help me as well and we both start our day off having fun together, with full bellies, and much more positive attitudes.
  4. Get yourself ready. It is so easy to get your toddler/kids ready like they’re about to walk the runway, but for some reason, us moms stop there. We don’t take care of ourselves and that takes a huge toll on your overall mood. When you don’t feel good about yourself, your mood will reflect that. If you are feeling really gutsy, you can even take a shower which is an instant pick me up and will leave you feeling like you can conquer anything.
  5. Make a to-do list. I am all about to do lists. When I was working, crossing things off my to do list was my favorite part of the day and now that I work from home, it is no different. Those to do lists now just include cleaning and running errands with a toddler in tow. Get all of your tasks together, and tackle them one by one by level of importance. Your day will seem so much more doable and less overwhelming.

Now that you’ve conquered your morning and can move onto bedtime, I recommend sitting down and watching Better Things on FX. You deserve to sit down and laugh, kid free, while watching a show that is SO relatable on so many levels of motherhood. Better Things is written by Louis CK and Pamela Adlon, who also stars in the show. She is a single mom of three girls, and the show follows their daily life. It does contain language and nudity, so make sure your kids are not only in bed (for the thousandth time), but actually asleep, and get ready to laugh hysterically.     Oh, my! The clip entitled “blowout,” is totally me. I don’t even know how many times a day I’ll be trying to do something productive; dishes, laundry, showering…it always ends with me yelling something along the lines of “coming,” or “alright!” This show, in general, seems so realistic.

    I never watch the news or any news program when my kids are around. They are too young to hear about and see how scary the world can be…that being said, I like to be aware of current events. So to start my morning right, I watch as much Good Morning America as I can before the kiddos get up, all while drinking my coffee, while it’s hot!!

    I love starting the day with quiet and peaceful calm. NO tv or music or anything. Just listening to the environment. Its a nice smooth transition to adjust to what the day has ahead!

    I almost wanted to say HEY it’s me before coffee in the AM w/that picture Ha.. For me I have to start my morning before anyone is up with prayer… with 4 kids and my crazy busy house that’s my strength! 🙂

    I do all 5 things, except I make my to-do list the night before. Otherwise, I stay up all night worrying about forgetting things. I am so looking forward to watching Better Things!

    I start my morning with taking a shower before anybody wakes up. I get natural light in the bathroom, so to me its really relaxing. If I can get coffee and get myself ready before anybody waking up, that makes my day. No screen time for first hour is a good one. Its tough!

    Girl I LOVE the title of your blog first of all! WTF Moments is perfect! I just started watching this show too and it’s filled with them! I love seeing this momma parent and show real moments that happen to all of us. Even the ones we don’t want to admit to others!

    I like to start my day with a little stretch and meditation. My kids are grown and gone, but what a difference this would have made for me when they were little!

    I cant imagine raising 3 girls alone. I relate to her being a single mom. I watched the First Look clip and enjoyed getting the main character’s perspective on it.

    Waking up before the kids is good advice, it makes you prepared and more productive as well. These are great tips, actually. I can’t wait for that show as well, I think it’s awesome!

    Wake up before the kids is the most important one for me. Unfortunately my early risers (and baby) don’t always allow for it. But, definitely something I strive for!

    Mornings are the toughest for me too but my kids never wake up at the same time so I really struggle to wake up before them. Lately, though I’ve found that getting myself ready in the morning is a real game-changer. I feel so much better about myself and ready to tackle the day. Great post!

    Making a to do list is my saving grace! I can’t function without one and I don’t even have kids. I feel like it’s easier to mark things off when they’re done and I feel so accomplished!

    I like starting my weekdays waking up early enough so I can slowly wake up and read the news. I also like to sit and drink my coffee with my dog and check out local new.

    I’m not a mom, but I know when I’m getting ready to go somewhere, I need to put my phone away until I’m finished getting ready or else I will be on facebook, IG, snapchat, etc haha

    I like to get up before everyone, get a big cu of coffee and sit onthe back porch with my husband. It rarely happens like that but a girl can dream.
